Sexual Trauma
Long-term distress from experiences like assault, abuse, or harassment, with varied short-term effects.
More information
Examples of sexual trauma and abuse could be sexual assault, rape, sexual abuse, stalking, sexual harassment, street harassment, childhood sexual abuse, familial sexual abuse, sex trafficking, online sexual harassment, and sexual violence in relationships. Short-term effects include shock, fear, anxiety, confusion, and withdrawal. Many survivors experience a reduction in symptoms within a few months, whereas some experience distress for years. Where trauma has placed strain on a partnership, relationship counseling can also be part of the healing process.
